Governor of Jammu and Kashmir

Mr. N. N. Vohra

Educated at the Punjab and Oxford Universities, Mr. N. N. Vohra served in the Indian Administrative Service during 1959 - 94. Among the positions held by him include: Home Secretary Punjab; Additional Secretary Defence; Secretary Defence Production; Defence Secretary; Home Secretary and Principal Secretary to Prime Minister. He also served in the Special Services Bureau along the Western Tibet border during 1962 - 64 and underwent training with the elite Special Airborne Services (SAS) of UK. As an international civil servant, he served with the W.H.O, Geneva, during 1982 – 84.


After retirement, he served as Director of the India International Centre, New Delhi; was member of the first National Security Advisory Board (1998 – 2001); Chairman of the National Task Force on Internal Security; Chairman of the IDSA Review Committee; Chairman of the Committee on Review of Military Histories; Co-Chairman of the India-European Union Round Table (2001 – 08); and Special Representative of the Government of India for the J&K Dialogue (2003 – 08).


Is a Life Member of the Indian Institute of Public Administration, United Services Institute, Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis and International House of Japan, Tokyo. Has been writing and lecturing on issues relating to National Security and Governance and has edited over a dozen books. Was awarded PADMA VIBHUSHAN in 2007.


Mr Vohra was sworn-in as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir on 25th June, 2008.
