(Reuters) - One person was killed in Kashmir on Monday, officials said, when police fired on Muslim protesters who set a Christian missionary school ablaze to protest reports that the Koran had been damaged in the United States.
"The attack on a Christian missionary school by a mob in north Kashmir's Tanmarg town is unfortunate," said Chief Secretary S. S. Kapur, Kashmir's top civil servant. "We appeal to the people not to heed unverified reports about the alleged desecration of the Holy Koran."
There were at least two incidents of abuse of the Koran in Lower Manhattan in New York on Saturday. Two evangelical preachers not affiliated with any mainstream church burned two copies of the Koran in Tennessee.
