BJP says it will hoist tricolour in Lal Chowk

The Jammu and Kashmir government has started sealing its border with Punjab in Lakhanpur to stop the BJP from going ahead with its yatra. The yatra is scheduled to culminate in Srinagar on January 26 with the hoisting of the tricolour in Lal Chowk.

However, the party said it would go ahead with its programme. The BJP accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of playing into the hands of separatists.

Forces being deployed

Confirming that sealing of the border had begun, Inspector-General of Police (Jammu zone) Dilbagh Singh told The Hindu: “All measures which are necessary to maintain peace are being taken. The deployment of forces has begun and the decision not to allow anyone to vitiate the atmosphere is being implemented in letter and in spirit.”

Official sources said more than 3,000 police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel were being pressed into service to seal the border.

The sources said the police were asked not to allow entry of any vehicle from Lakhanpur, 90 km south of Jammu. Personnel were being deployed on a bridge linking Madhopur in Punjab with Lakhanpur.

The Jammu and Kashmir government had approached Punjab and sought its help to seal the bridge on its side. But it had refused to do so.
