Literature

Dogri, the mother tongue of Dogras, has rich tradition of folk literature. These deals with every aspect of life from the cradle to grave. The rich literature of Dogri consists of folk tales, riddles and proverbs. There are also number of narrative poems in the praise of God known as Bhetas.

District Udhampur has produced number of Dogri Poets and writer of Dogri Literature such as Jia Lal Jia, Uttam Chand, Sant Ram Shastri, Jitender Udhampuri, Prakash Premi, Dinu Bhai Pant etc. Few of them were well renowned by the Sahitya Academy.

Dogri Language

The major languages spoken in the district Hindi, Urdu, Kashmiri, Dogri. Apart from these languages other main dialects spoken in the district are Pehari, Goujri etc. The Dogri one of the modern language spoken in the Jammu region of the Jammu & Kashmir State. 

The Dogri language belongs to the Aryan languages. Many word of the Dogri language are derived from the Hindi & Sanskrit words. In fact the language is written in the Devnagari Script.

Roads are mainly built and maintained by State Public Works Department PWD(R&B) in the District, although some roads are maintained by Rural Development Department, Border Road Organizations, Military Engineering Services and other State/Central Govt Departments. 

The Total road length maintained by the PWD in the district is 751 Kms out of which 534 Kms is surfaced and 217 Kms is unsurfaced. The surfaced roads includes 381 Kms black topped, 98 Kms metalled and 66 Kms of shingled categories, whereas unsurfaced roads includes 216 Kms of fair weather and 1 Kms of Jeepable roads.

The health care is being provided at considerably wide and improved scale, both in rural and urban areas. At present there are 317 medical institutions in the district which includes One District hospital and six sub-district hospitals, 30 Primary Health Centers, 24 sub centers, 28 allopathic dispensaries, 43 Ayurvedic dispensaries. 

About 132 family welfare centers and sub centers are running in the in the District. With a total of about three hundred doctors there is one doctor available for every 2399 persons in the district. Whereas there are nine medical institutions for every 20000 persons.

Industries

The District Udhampur is relatively backward in terms of industries. There is no large scale or medium scale industries in the District. However, there is good potential for the development of textiles, irons and steel, forest based and live stock based small scale industries. After the inception of DIC programme, the industrial activities in the district has been stimulated. The small scale Industrial units have started crop up and providing the employment to local population. There were more than 3500 small scale industrial units registered with DIC Udhampur providing employment to more than 8500 persons.

At District HQ an area of 49.4 Kanals has been allotted for the Industrial Estate where in Nine small Scale Industries are functioning at present. Following are the major small scale industries setup in the district

Handlooms

There are about Five handloom training centers in the district where in the 55 person were trained in the handloom operation.

Handicrafts

There are about twenty four handloom training centers in the district where in the 322 person were trained for phoolkari, staple, crewel etc.

Khadi & Village Industries

The Khadi and Village industries are playing an important role in providing employment and increasing income in the rural areas. There are about 1500 Khadi & Village Industrial Units providing employment to about 6000 people.

Progress has been made in the development of Power resources in the District. Most of the Villages have been electrified and provided power for the domestic as well as for agriculture/commercial use. out of Total 618 inhabited villages 585 villages has been provided with the Electricity. The total annual consumption of Electricity is approx. 1129.86 lakh unit.

The Two major Power Project in the District Udhampur is Salal Hydro Power Project -I & II located in Tehsil Reasi on the river Chenab with the generation capacity of 690 MWs operated by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). In addition to these two Power Project the State Electric Department has setup three minor Power Houses in the District Udhampur with installed capacity of 32.80 MW.

Education Facilities

Education is free from 1st class to University level in the District. There are about 991 Primary, 197 Middle, 98 high/higher secondary schools  and two colleges in the District. The educational facilities have been spread even in hilly and backward area/pockets of the District. At present the District Udhampur is having one Primary School for every 44 children whereas the pupil school ratio for the state is one for 76 children.

The total number of school going children is 1,11,430 out of which 46,307 are the female students. The total number of teachers is about 4416 including 1415 females teachers. The table below shows the salient features of the education department in the district Udhampur:
